What We Do

No one else helps children in Guelph and Wellington like The Children’s Foundation. Each year, hundreds of children rely on the Foundation to help them experience a part of childhood that many of us take for granted. But the reality is that the need is far greater than the Foundation can meet. Thousands of children in Guelph and Wellington County need the benefits of the programs that only the Foundation funds. Many groups that provide direct services to children rely on The Children’s Foundation to help further enrich the lives of children in their programs.

Every child helped is part of the Guelph and Wellington community. Each dollar raised goes to helping a child in the Guelph and Wellington community.

The approach of The Foundation is to allow children and their families to choose the program they wish to access. The role of The Foundation is to help provide the means so that the child can take part. This means that children are able to go to a diverse number of programs and be in these programs with other children, many of whom do not have similar backgrounds. This fact, it is believed by The Foundation, helps to further enrich the experience.

The Children’s Foundation Grants focus on providing funds to allow for educational and recreational enrichment for individual children. Each child is referred to the Foundation by a referring agency. These referrals focus on the need of the child and how the funds will help to advance the educational or recreational experience of that child. Specific amounts must be requested. The referring agency receives the funds to ensure that they are used for the requested purpose. In 2007, over 175 children accessed funds through The Grants.

The Future Fund Scholarships are offered to each of the 11 high schools in Guelph and Wellington County. The criteria for recipients focuses not on academic standing but rather on life achievement and goals in the face of difficult life situations. The scholarship takes into account the background of the child and the need they have to be able to move on to post-secondary education.

The Adopt-A-Family Program currently focuses on partnering families in need with donor families at Christmas time. These families in need require assistance in providing a full experience for the entire family at this time of the year. Donor families are asked to provide unwrapped gifts and food vouchers for the children of the family in need as well as a gift for the parent(s) of the family. In 2007, it is 432 families were helped. This will include were over 960 children and over 400 parents.

Food and Friends supports 58 nutrition programs for students in Wellington and Dufferin counties. We believe that every child has the right to go to school well nourished and ready to learn. In the 2007/2008 school year, on site programs will provide meals to over 10,000 students. Our programs depend on our volunteers, and community and corporate support.

The Camp Program is specifically directed at subsidizing or paying in full camp fees for children in care of Family and Children’s Services of Guelph and Wellington County. In 2007, a total of 429 children were provided funds for a wonderful camp experience.

The Promoli Family Scholarship is for one child in the care of Family & Children’s Services of Guelph & Wellington.
